My best friend
During my three years in junior high school, I've made many friends. Among them, Wang Qi is my best friend.
Summer vacation is my favorite time of the year. It is long, fun, and full of great things to do. Here are some reasons why I love it so much.
(第一), summer is a time to relax. During the school term, we are (忙绿的) with lessons, tests, and homework. In summer, we are free from all those tasks. We can take a trip, go swimming, or simply sleep (晚;迟). Second, summer is great for spending time with family. My (生日) is in August, so we always have a party. I like eating cake and sharing gifts with my parents (和) friends. It's a very happy time.
Third, I (有) so many fun activities to do in summer. There are art festivals, trips to the park, and outdoor sports.
Last year, I learned to play (篮球). This year, I want to try something new, like drawing or fishing.
Finally, summer is a time to prepare for the future. Even though it's a holiday, we can use some hours to read books or learn something (有用的). My mom says I should practice math, and my dad thinks (地理) is important, too.
In short, summer vacation is not only fun but also a chance to grow. I love everything (关于) it and can't wait for the next one to come!
Last month, I took a boat to Turtle Island. There used (be)a fishermen's town. Then it became an army base (军事基地). And now it is a (nature) park.
The boat went around the island before it stopped there. That gave me a chance to learn about (it) shape. I could see the turtle's head, back and tail. Near turtle's head, I saw the "Milky Sea". It is from the hot springs under the water.
From the boat, I also saw dolphins in the water. They (swim) next to the boat, and one came really close. I took some pictures of it. The dolphins were so funny.
On Turtle Island, I got the boat near the turtle's tail. Then, I walked to the (visit) center. I met my guide there and he showed me around. First, we visited the town's old temple. After that, the guide took me to some bunkers (地堡). Soldiers used to stay in them and watch for enemies (careful).
I wanted to climb Turtle Mountain, I didn't have time. I had to go back to the turtle's tail and get on the boat. I didn't regret it because I (go) to Turtle Island again. It is really a cool place to visit.

When we got to the park, we found a nice place under a big tree. My grandpa sat down and read a book, while my grandma was the birds. My sister and I played with our dog. He ran everywhere, catching a ball. My brother said, "Let's take a picture of everyone!" In the photo, all looked very excited.

Most kids need about 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night to stay healthy and do their best in school. But many kids don't get enough sleep because of homework, activities, or spending time with friends. Here are some tips to help you sleep better at night.
Going to bed at the same time every night helps your body know when it's time to go to sleep. To set your bedtime, think about when you need to wake up. For example, if you need to wake up at 7 am and want 10 hours of sleep, you should go to bed at 9 pm.
Give yourself one hour to get ready for bed. You can divide this hour into three parts: 20 minutes to get ready for tomorrow (like packing your bag or getting your clothes), 20 minutes to clean up (like taking a shower and brushing your teeth), and 20 minutes to relax (like reading a book or listening to soft music). Make sure your bed is comfortable.
Some things you do or eat can make it harder to go to sleep. Try not to drink drinks with caffeine (like tea, coffee, or soda) in the afternoon or evening. Don't eat a big snack close to bedtime. Exercise can help you feel sleepy, but don't exercise too close to bed. Also, avoid screens before bedtime because the light from screens can make your brain think it's still daytime.
It may take a couple of weeks for your new sleep routine to work. If you can't fall asleep after 20 minutes, it's okay to get up and do something relaxing, like reading in a chair, until you feel tired.
A. Be patient. B. Set a bedtime. C. Relax before bedtime. D. Eat something healthy. E. Avoid things that steal sleep. |

Plants are an important food for many living things, including humans. Plant eaters are animals that eat plants. They can be large, like cows, sheep, or horses, but most of them are actually much tinier, such as caterpillars (毛虫).
With so many creatures trying to attack (攻击) plants, you can imagine that they have a hard time living. Since plants cannot run away from their attackers, they have to develop different ways of protecting themselves.
Plants have developed several defenses (防御物) against animals that eat plants. Roses look pretty and small good. They aren't very strong, but they have thorns to frighten away animals. So the animals can't eat their beautiful flowers. Cacti (仙人掌) live in the hot, dry desert. Animals would like to drink the water and juice in these plants. so cacti cover their bodies with many thorns. These thorns can hurt animals. Some trees have sharp leaves. These leaves can also keep animals away.
Other defenses, such as chemical defenses, can be seen less. Each plant produces thousands of different chemicals. Some chemicals, like sugars, give energy to the plant. Other groups of chemicals help to defend plants against attackers. These chemical defenses can make the plant taste bad, which prevents animals from eating the plant. Tomatoes make their leaves taste very bad so that animals don't like to eat them. There are many plants that will make you feel sick if you eat them, such as the fruit of the black nightshade (茄属拉物). Some plants, like poison ivy or hog. weed (毒常青藤或猪草), can even cause burns when you touch them. Most chemical defenses aren't that bad, though.
Plants use these defenses to stay alive. They keep plants safe from hungry animals.
Tour guides in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province are very happy because more tourists from other countries are visiting this year.
China has made it easier for tourists to visit by allowing people from 38 countries to enter without a visa for up to 30 days. This change has caused many more travelers to come from different parts of the world.
There are not enough tour guides who speak foreign languages, so travel companies in Zhangjiajie have had to turn down some groups because they are too busy.
Wang Xiaoqing, who has been an English tour guide in Zhangjiajie for more than 10 years, said she has been very busy since March. She works almost every day and only gets a short rest once in a while. She says she loves her job and enjoys meeting people from different countries. Some tourists come back or tell their friends and family about her service, which makes her very happy.
Ding Shibiao, a manager at Hunan Star Tours said all of their tour guides with foreign language skills have been busy since April. Many tourists from Western countries are visiting Zhangjiajie now, and the need for guides who can speak English, French, and Spanish is very high. Finding enough guides is hard, so Ding sometimes has to help out himself.
Li Ping, the head of the Zhangjiajie tourism guide association, said that this year, the number of foreign tourists visiting the city is expected to be the highest ever. Zhangjiajie has 400 licensed guides, but there are about 1, 500 people with foreign language skills who help out too. Tour guides now make more money, with some making up to 800 yuan a day.
Zhangjiajie is happy to see so many travelers coming to enjoy its beautiful nature and culture.
Henry sat on the step in front of the house. He looked into space and didn't even notice his brother until Daniel stood right in front of him.
"Where were you, Henry?" Daniel asked his brother. "It seemed like you were a million miles away. You didn't even hear me calling you, did you?"
Henry shook his head and then looked at his older brother. "Daniel, have you ever had stage fright (怯场)?" he finally asked.
"Sure, " said Daniel. "Do you remember that play I was in a few years ago? I knew my lines, but I was afraid of forgetting them. I might forget how to spell everything even my own name! I don't know what to do. " Daniel put his arm around his brother's shoulder. "I'll help you get through this. △You have to practice as much as you can before the day of the competition. "
"Then, I'll teach you the way my coach taught me, " continued Daniel. "Close your eyes and imagine yourself doing the thing that you're worried about. You go through the situation in your mind so you can see what it feels like to do it and do it well. It might sound strange, but believe me, it works. "
